(FOX40.COM) — Friends and family of a longtime Sacramento bail bondsman who died in an attack earlier this week gathered to remember him and rail against supposed cuts to law enforcement by local leaders on Thursday morning.

Kevin Brace, 56, was identified as the victim of an early Monday morning attack outside of the office where he worked for 31 years.

Employees of the office, Greg Padilla Bail Bonds, said he answered the door when a man approached asking to use the phone. An altercation ensued and the man allegedly beat Brace, killing him.

The suspect was identified as 38-year-old Jacob Mandell. Sacramento Police said he was taken into custody following the attack, and he is being held without bail.

The San Juan Unified School District confirmed that Mandell coached at El Camino Fundamental High School for the 2023-24 wrestling season, which ended in March.

Topo Padilla of the bail bond office said at a Thursday morning news conference, “Kevin is just a man who would not harm anybody,” and that he is “devastated for our city… I’m devastated for the people who work in the city… I’m devastated for the people who want to come down here and visit.”

Padilla said the city should do more to maintain a police presence in downtown and throughout the city, singling out Mayor Darrell Steinberg.

In a statement, Steinberg expressed his deepest sympathies to the family, coworkers and friends of Kevin Brace, and said, “The proposed city budget does not cut public safety coverage in our city and does not reduce funding for any of our violence prevention programs in downtown or elsewhere.”

“…We have contributed millions of dollars to maintaining a clean and safe downtown and are maintaining our ongoing funding commitments,” the statement continued.

A Sacramento Police spokesperson told The Sacramento Bee that the suspect accused in Brace’s death was not experiencing homelessness and that it is unclear why he was roaming the downtown block where the bail bonds office is located.
