Texas police say they are searching for a mother accused of leaving her baby outside someone’s house and waiting nearly 40 minutes to tell anyone he was there.

A woman walked outside her southeast Houston home to find a baby in a car seat sitting outside her front gate at about 6:15 a.m. March 21, according to a criminal complaint filed in Harris County.

She brought the baby inside and called 911, court documents show.

Video footage from that night shows a woman, later identified as the 23-year-old mother and suspect, walking up the street at 12:10 a.m. and leaving the crying baby in his car seat in front of the house, according to the complaint.

Police said the woman sent a text to a man described as possibly the baby’s father, at 12:50 a.m. saying, “Your son outside. Tell your mom to get him,” and “better get your son,” according to the complaint.

It’s unclear from the complaint if the woman who found the baby was the man’s mother.

The man told police he did not know if the baby was his son and said he did not see the text message from the baby’s mother until 8 a.m., according to court records.

Police were able to identify the baby and the suspect from information provided by family members, the complaint said.

After a medical check, the almost 9-month-old was determined to be in “good health” and was placed with a foster family, according to police.

The mother faces a felony charge of abandoning a child without intent to return, court records show.

Court records show that she is out on bond on drug possession and robbery charges in Fort Bend County, unrelated to this case.
