A family in Ohio is mourning after their son was swept away by waves in Lake Erie.

The boy, identified only as Hunter, was at Conneaut Township Park with his mother June 7, according to WJW.

“Hunter was ankle deep in the water and just like that, he was swept away,” a GoFundMe page said. “His mother, Diana, fought those waves until she almost gave up her life as well trying to find Hunter.”

Officials and community members searched for Hunter for days.

“You guys already know that I’ve been out here in Conneaut looking for my boy,” Sam Chambers said in a Facebook post. “It has become a recovery mission.”

On Tuesday, June 11, Conneaut Police shared a Facebook post saying Hunter’s body was found.

“It is with great sadness to report 10-year-old Hunter has been recovered. He has been transported from the scene to the Cleveland Medical Examinator’s office for examination. Please keep Hunter’s family in your thoughts and prayers,” police said in the post.

Some news outlets have reported Hunter was 11 years old.

Springfield Local Schools released a statement on Facebook after Hunter went missing.

“It is with a heavy heart that I have some sad news to share. One of our upcoming sixth grade students, Hunter, was lost in Lake Erie Friday afternoon. This is a devastating and unimaginable loss for our school community. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to Hunter’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement said.

Conneaut is about a 70-mile drive northeast from Cleveland.
