Lawsuit photos show California officer smiling over a handcuffed woman, 66, who later died

The Police Department has not said whether it disciplined the officer. Nyota Koya, a 66-year-old Black woman from Roseville, California, lost consciousness during an encounter with a Sacramento police officer named Matthew Sterling on Nov. 17, 2024, and died a week later without regaining consciousness. Nearly two years later, the Sacramento Police Department has not disclosed its disciplinary actions to Koya's daughter or the public. The lawsuit, brought by Koya’s estate and daughter Nathifa Wright, seeks damages for 17 claims including false detention, excessive force, and wrongful death. Body camera footage shows Sterling forcibly pulling Koya from her car and handcuffing her. The civil lawsuit names the city of Sacramento, the police department, Sterling and Police Chief Katherine Lester as defendants.
