(FOX40.COM) — A Northern California police department warned consumers of a scam that involves selling stolen vehicles on Facebook Marketplace.
On June 2, the Fairfield Police Department responded to the area of North Texas Street and Air Base Parkway for a FLOCK alert about a stolen car. A police drone observed the vehicle enter the parking lot of a store and kept watch until officers arrived. When officers showed up, they said the vehicle was unoccupied.
After the driver returned to the vehicle, FPD said it learned it had been purchased through Facebook Marketplace before “exchanging several hands.”
“Unfortunately, it’s believed the Facebook listing was fraudulent,” FPD said.
The incident prompted the police department to provide advice for consumers who shop on Facebook.
• Check the seller’s profile and reviews.
• Report any listing that appears to be fraudulent or suspicious to FB and notify local authorities
• Meet in a safe place and scrutinize any paperwork for oddities before paying.
• Check the Carfax.
• Never bring large amounts of cash. Use a secure payment method, like PayPal, that will investigate and help you get your money back if need be.
