Council approves Tower District safety plan, special vendor lot—residents express concern
“This weekend, we will not be perfect on this,” Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer said of the “Vendor Market Zone” on Wednesday night, the night prior to the council’s vote. The Fresno city council has approved a resolution to establish a special geographic zone for street vendors in the Tower District. The pilot program will relocate street food vendors from sidewalks to a designated area where they can operate for 90 days. The area will be equipped with lighting, a security camera and security officers. However, some residents and patrons of the entertainment district have expressed skepticism about this plan. Changes have already been implemented to address issues such as crowded sidewalks increasing the likelihood of conflicts. The city is also working with business owners to ensure some establishments' patio areas are closed by 10 p.m. to prevent conflicts between bar-goers and pedestrians.
