The ordinance will require bars, nightclubs and restaurants to carry two doses of the medication free of charge.

The ordinance, spearheaded by Council President Annalisa Perea, is a big step towards improved public health and safety in Fresno.

Fresno will be the first city in the state and the second in the country to adopt the ordinance.

Perea when addressing the Fresno County Department of Public Health, which is providing Narcan, says this initiative is also an important step in combatting rising opioid overdoses.

“Their dedication to public health and commitment to this initiative have been instrumental in advancing our efforts to combat opioid overdoses," said Perea.

Business managers will be required to undergo training to learn how to administer the medication.
