The first Delta Air Lines nonstop flight from Atlanta to Fresno took to the skies Friday afternoon, marking the start of the longest-distance direct airline service for Fresno Yosemite International Airport.

“This is truly an exciting time for air travel here in Fresno,” Mayor Jerry Dyer said Friday. “The growth here is undeniable, and it’s leading to bigger and better things for our entire city.

The new nonstop service between Fresno and Atlanta will provide a wider array of connections for air travelers in the central San Joaquin Valley, including to the East Coast, Latin America, Europe and Africa.

“By connecting to Atlanta, we’re increasing Fresno’s visibility as an attractive and progressive city with diverse service to major transportation hubs,” Dyer said.

The Atlanta flights will reach farther east than any others from Fresno – almost 2,000 miles – surpassing the 1,750 miles on United Airlines’ seasonal service to Chicago. The inaugural flight departed Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport – the busiest airport in the world – at about 7:45 p.m. Eastern time and was expected to arrive in Fresno at about 9 p.m. Pacific time.

The first return flight to Atlanta, an overnight red-eye, was scheduled to leave Fresno at about 10:30 p.m. Friday and reach Atlanta on Saturday at 5:52 a.m. Eastern time, or about 2:52 a.m. Pacific time. There is a three-hour time difference between Atlanta and Fresno.

Dyer said he expects the new Atlanta route to add to a record number of passengers flying to and from Fresno. In 2023, the airport served about 2.4 million passengers.

“We are trending to beat that number this calendar year,” he said. “I’m confident that we’re going to blow past the number we had last year.”

Atlanta has been one of the top 10 destinations for passengers departing from Fresno airport, Dyer added: “A direct flight like this makes all the sense in the world.”

Delta’s new flights, which are expected to be offered year-round, are only one component of expanded airline service at Fresno.

United Airlines resumed its seasonal nonstop service between Fresno and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport in May, offering daily fights through October.

Southwest Airlines was set to commence a new summer route between Fresno and Dallas’ Love Field with one weekly flight through September, supplementing American Airlines’ existing daily year-round flights between Fresno and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

Delta will use 160-seat Boeing 737-800 jets for the new route.

The airline has, through an agreement with Utah-based SkyWest Airlines, provided flights between Fresno and Salt Lake City. That service has been a staple of the Fresno airport for years, and Salt Lake City was the fifth-ranked destination for nonstop flights from Fresno in 2022 at just shy of 70,000 passengers.

But Delta has also had some fits and starts in Fresno, at times offering – and subsequently discontinuing – nonstop service to Los Angeles and Seattle.
