Valley Children's Hospital President and CEO Todd Suntrapak is speaking out for the first time since Fresno City council members accused him of excessive pay.

Fresno City Councilmen Miguel Arias and Garry Bredefeld sent a letter to California Attorney General Rob Bonta in March, requesting an investigation into the operations at VCH.

The letter asked AG Bonta to look into what they called, "a disgraceful scheme of gross overcompensation of Valley Children’s Hospital Chief Executive Officer Todd Suntrapak and another 27 executives."

Suntrapak says when he signed on with the hospital in 2012 his pay was only in the 11th percentile for the job.

“There are no discussions with me about my compensation other than the board Comp Committee, notifying me what it’s going to be after they’ve gone through a very regimented process, utilizing at least one outside consultant that’s nationally renowned for doing that work, and sometimes two, and then it’s presented to me," Suntrapak said.

He says his compensation did not reach the 50th percentile until 2018.

In recent years, his pay has more than doubled.

Currently, he is paid a base salary of about $1.7 million with another $3.4 million in bonuses and more.
