California pier plans to ban hanging dead sharks. More fishing rules may follow
The city can’t end pier fishing entirely. Here’s what it can do. The Pismo Beach, California, City Council has approved a draft ordinance to prohibit hanging fish, lines, and equipment from the Pier. The ordinance also allows the council to designate areas of the pier where fishing is prohibited, limit each person to two fishing rods, and prohibit fastening rods or rod holders to the pier’s structure. The council's unanimous approval came after concerns about public safety and cleanliness caused by fishing and subsequent cleaning of catches. However, city manager Jorge Garcia stated that the council cannot fully end fishing on the pier as it is approved as a municipal fishing pier and the practice of discarding fish guts into the ocean after cleaning is legal. The city's fishing licenses are not required under the state's Fish and Game code and so long as catches are not prohibited species, they're generally legal to catch, keep and consume.
