ICE releases some detainees in Fresno far from home under ‘cruel’ tactic, officials say
“Sometimes they’re released with all of their personal belongings ... and sometimes they’re not.” ICE has been releasing detainees from outside of California at processing centers in Fresno and Bakersfield, leaving them stranded hundreds of miles away without money or belongings, according to officials and immigrant rights advocates. The detainees, some from as far away as the East Coast, are sometimes released late at night and without charging their phones. U.S. Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno, and Nora Zaragoza-Yáñez of the Valley Watch Network, said the practice "just makes no sense." The Department of Homeland Security has denied using racial profiling tactics, but declined to provide details about its operations in the region. Congressional representatives from California have sent a letter to acting ICE Director David Venturella demanding answers about the agency's apparent arrest surge.
