A bison was “defending its space” when it gored an 83-year-old tourist in Yellowstone National Park, officials said.

The woman from Greenville, South Carolina, was gored by the animal June 1 near the Storm Point Trail at Yellowstone Lake, park officials said in a news release.

It was feet from her when it lifted her about a foot off the ground with its horns, officials said.

As a result, she had serious injuries and was taken to the Lake Medical Clinic within the park and then flown to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, officials said.

Officials said they do not have an update on the woman’s current condition.

The incident is under investigation.

In 2023, there were 4.5 million people who visited Yellowstone National Park, according to park rangers.

What to know about bison

Multiple people have been injured by bison.

A 47-year-old woman was gored by a bison in 2023 when she turned to walk away from it in Yellowstone National Park, officials said. She had been walking in a field with another person near Yellowstone Lake.

In 2022, a 25-year-old woman was gored by a bison and tossed 10 feet into the air at Yellowstone, rangers said. The woman had walked toward the bison on a boardwalk near the Old Faithful geyser and came within 10 feet.

A 34-year-old Colorado man was also gored by a bison while walking near Old Faithful with family when the animal charged toward them, according to park officials.

“Bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal,” park rangers said. “They are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans.”

Bison are huge animals that can weigh 2,000 pounds and run up to 30 mph, according to the park. Stay at least 75 feet away from bison at all times.
