MADERA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A vigil to honor the lives of the seven farmworkers and the truck driver killed in a Madera County crash was held in Madera.

Minerva Mendoza with the Pan Valley Institute Program says the vigil was held for the community to heal together after the fatal crash that ended with eight lives in February.

“We hope to provide a space in which the community can come together, talk about, grieve about it, you know?” she said. “Leave our feelings be because most of us in Madera have farm-working family members, neighbors, friends, and so for us it was very painful to hear the news of what happened last month.”

Mendoza also says this is a reminder of the continuing work that needs to be done to protect the working conditions of the farm working community.

The vigil was held at the Madera’s Court House Park from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
