TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama men’s basketball assistant Ryan Pannone received promising news as he was named a finalist for Fresno State’s head coaching job.

Pannone has a background in coaching both high school and college basketball, as well as domestic and international professional basketball. He joined head coach Nate Oats’ coaching staff last season after serving as an assistant for the New Orleans Pelicans. He spent 2019-2022 as the head coach of the Pelicans G-League affiliate, first in Erie, Penn. (Erie BayHawks) then in Birmingham (Birmingham Squadron).

If Pannone is hired by Fresno State, he would become the fifth assistant under Nate Oats’ in the past year to be hired as a head coach elsewhere.

Another finalist along for Fresno Stare’s coaching opening is Vance Walberg. Walberg is a high school coach in Fresno now and was previously the coach for Fresno City College (2002-2006). Oats’ studied Walberg’s dribble-drive offense system and has been known to credit him for the way he runs his offense today.
